The heel cap idea is not mine I must say. I stole it from somewhere. Not sure where.

Neck angle... Well before the back goes on I clamp it (the back) in place and with a straight edge along the neck, I pull the neck into the proper position to give me the correct height at the bridge. Through the sound hole I then mark the foot location on the back seam reinforcement. With the back off I cut the back seam reinforcement where marked and then glue on the back clamping everything in the predetermined position. This all takes place away from the solera.

Thanks for passing along this tip, Ronn. I've been doing it by trial and error. I like the sound this approach much better.

Regarding the purfling/binding treatment at the heel, I've also seen a number of builders use this same technique, the most prominent of which is Paulino Bernabe. I personally like it not only for its appearance, but for its simplicity.

Best,

Michael

I kind of like it as well. I recently read a post on a CG site and the player was saying he liked his action high. 6mm at the 12th fret!! So suppose a customer askes for a specific action, high or low, this method makes it pretty easy to dial in his/her action to the center of the adjustment range for that particular guitar.
